Stump Grinding in Belle Isle
An old stump trips the mower, sends up suckers and holds a corner of the yard hostage. We grind it below grade, deal with the chips and roots, and give you a firm arrival window so you know when the machine will be at your home.

When grinding is the right answer for a stump
Stump grinding uses a rotating cutter wheel to chew the stump into chips, working down past the soil line. It does not pull the whole root system out. The visible stump and the root flare go away, and the remaining roots break down in the ground over the following years. For most yards that is the cleaner, gentler choice than digging, which leaves a crater and tears up the lawn around it.
Grinding makes sense when a tree is already down, when a past removal left the stump behind, or when you want to plant, lay sod or build in that spot. Laurel oaks and water oaks are common here and their stumps can sprout and attract termites if left. Palm stumps are fibrous rather than woody and break apart differently, so we set the grinder up for whichever you have.
If the tree is still standing, our tree trimming and removal crew can take it down first and we can schedule the grinding for the same visit or a set day after.

What the work includes
- 01
Utility locate before we cut
We request a Sunshine 811 locate so buried lines are marked before the cutter wheel goes into the ground. That step sets the earliest grinding date, and we tell you that date when we book.
- 02
Grinding below grade
We grind well below the surrounding soil, deep enough for sod or a planting bed to sit flat. If you plan a paver patio or a new tree in that spot, tell us and we will go deeper where it is practical.
- 03
Surface roots out to the drip zone
Roots that ride above the soil and catch the mower are ground along with the stump. Deeper roots stay in place to decay naturally.
- 04
Your choice on the chips
Chips can stay as fill, be raked into a nearby bed or hauled away. Grinding produces more material than people expect, so we talk it through before the day.
- 05
Backfill and cleanup
We backfill the hole with topsoil when you want the spot ready for grass, then blow chips off walks, drives and the lanai.
Questions about Stump Grinding?
Call(407) 783-8044Signs a stump needs to go
New shoots keep coming up
Suckers around the base mean the roots are still alive. Cutting them back each month only feeds the cycle.
Soft wood or insect activity
A decaying stump in warm, damp ground draws termites, carpenter ants and fungus. Grinding removes the food source close to your home.
It is in the way of a project
New sod, a bed, a walkway or a patio cannot go down cleanly over a stump. Grinding is usually the first step in landscape design work.
Mowing around it is a chore
Scalped grass, a string-trimmed ring and nicked blades add up every week of the growing season.
Roots lifting turf or edging
Surface roots that bulge through the lawn or push against edging will keep causing trip spots until they are ground out.
How a grinding visit runs
- 1
Estimate and walkthrough
We look at stump size, access through gates and how close it sits to fences, the foundation or irrigation heads. You get the price and the chip plan before anything is booked.
- 2
Locate and booking
Once the utility marks are in, we give you a date and an arrival window. If rain or an earlier job pushes us, we call you ahead of time with the new window rather than leaving you waiting.
- 3
Grinding day
We lay plywood where the machine crosses soft turf, flag sprinkler heads near the stump and shield nearby glass and siding. Most residential stumps take well under an hour once we are set up.
- 4
Finish and walk-off
We rake out or remove chips, backfill if planned, clean hard surfaces and walk the spot with you. If sod is next, our sod installation crew can lay it once the soil settles.
What moves the price of stump grinding
Every stump is priced after we see it, and the figure on your estimate covers the work it describes. Size, access and your plan for the chips do most of the moving. When grinding is one piece of a larger yard project, you can finance it, with amounts up to $100,000, terms anywhere from 2 to 12 years and no penalty for paying it off early.
- Diameter and root flare
- We measure across the widest point at ground level. A wide oak flare holds far more wood than the trunk suggests.
- Access to the stump
- Narrow side gates, fenced backyards and slopes may call for a smaller machine and more time on site.
- Depth and surface roots
- Grinding deeper for a patio or chasing long surface roots adds time.
- Chip removal and backfill
- Leaving chips costs least. Hauling them off and bringing in topsoil adds labor and material.
- Number of stumps
- Several stumps in one visit share the setup, which lowers the cost of each one.
Stump grinding questions
How deep do you grind?
Deep enough for sod or a bed to lie flat with no wood near the surface. If you plan a patio, a footing or a replacement tree, tell us at the estimate and we will plan for a deeper grind where the roots and nearby utilities allow it.
Can I plant a new tree in the same spot?
You can, but it is better to offset it a few feet. Old chips and decaying roots tie up nitrogen in the soil for a while. If it has to be the exact spot, we remove the chips and backfill with fresh soil.
Will the grinder damage my lawn or sprinklers?
We lay boards across soft ground and flag every head we can find near the stump. Lines run close to stumps more often than people think, so if one is nicked we tell you right away and point you to our irrigation team for the fix.
How long until I hear back on a date?
We give you a booking date once the utility locate is scheduled, then an arrival window for the day itself. If weather shifts things, you hear from us before the original window, not after it.
Do I need to be home?
Not always. If we have clear gate access and you have seen the chip plan at the estimate, we can work while you are out and walk you through the finished spot by phone afterward.
